Beth's Breast Cancer Blog

Want to say Hi?

Welcome to a day in the life of Beth Mellor, Beeboo artist and designer.

A bit of background...
I'm married to a self-employed carpenter with two school age children. We live in a wild-kingdom with 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 fish, 2 turtles, and too many chickens to count.

I have a bachelor's degree in Illustration from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and work full-time as the staff artist in Media Services at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grafton, MA. I create websites, illustrations for publication, graphic design of brochures, newsletters, posters, whatever is needed. Every day is different.

I launched Beeboo in 1998 naming the business after my daughter Bee, and son Boo (nicknames of course). In 2000 my talented jack-of-all-trades husband, James, converted our screen porch to a studio. We set up a hot station for lampworking and fused glass, and a cold station for jewelry making. It's constantly in a state of chaos (as is the rest of my house) but I love it!

At the age of 71 my fabulous father, Herb, was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). My mom, Natalie, was Dad's primary care-giver. Throughout the 2 year battle with ALS both she and Dad continued to make the most of every day, taking it as it comes and relishing the time they had together.

Dad passed away in April of 2005 after a long battle with the disease. We love you and miss you Herb, Dad, Papa... You are my inspiration.

A day in the life...

I just found a little video clip of Papa and Boo singing while filtering through some ancient mavica disks. Brings a smile along with teary eyes. Miss you Papa!

I'm finally getting back into the studio and online with Beeboo. Nice. Chemo is going well with only three treatments left. If interested you can read more on the Blog. For this journal I'll stick with a little taste of what's new with Beeboo at Etsy. It feels great to get back to making pretty little things... Happy Valentines Day! Beth

Sorry for the huge delay in update on this page. I've been dealing with all the new health issues of breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery but am doing well. The surgical side was a nightmare but chemo is becoming manageable. If you want to read the medical updates please visit my breast cancer blog. I'll drop in a quick photo of the buzzing of the hair below. The blog has a single image but I thought I'd drop in a grouping of the family hair night here as well. James joined in the fun. As you can see we're trying to keep spirits up through all of this and, I'm actually enjoying my new do. May keep it this way once it grows back post-chemo.

Beeboo is still up and running. I had a more mellow holiday season but managed to squeeze in a couple fairs with the help of my sisters, a few web sales even though the site was sitting stagnent (sp?) and a few stressed husbands rushing by the house on Christmas Eve Day. I need to mark more items as sold on the site and update with new stock so please hold off on purchasing anything for now.

Off to my Mom's birthday party today. I may not last too long as I'm feeling the effects of a chemo treatment on Thursday but it'll be fun to help celebrate and visit with the far away aunts, uncles, and cousins. Thanks for visiting and have a Happy and Healthy New Year! Beth

Not a fun update... I've been diagnosed with breast cancer. I've set up a blog to keep the cancer updates off this site but make information accessible for family and friends. I'd like to be able to communicate information electronically to keep conversations at home and at work more upbeat. I go to meet with my oncology team for the first time tomorrow (Happy Halloween!) Wish me luck. Beth

Huge web update. Check out all the gallery pages with links to the left. And a quick flashback of Princess Bee and Boo Batman reclining on the lawn. Quite a change from the year 2000 to the '07 shot below below... time flies... amazingly I haven't aged a bit!

Monday, 9/17/07

Still here, still kicking, kids back in school, couple vacations under our belts, too hot florida, just perfect truro, soccer, soccer, soccer, baby chick, itchy dogs, lego robotics, girl scouts (again), cleaning hah!, maybe some art fairs... let you know soon.

Boo & Bee 1st Day of School Fall 2007

Monday, 5/21/07

Lot's happening with Beeboo and the Mellor household. I'm taking a jewelry class at the Worcester Craft Center and loving it. Hoping to integrate metalsmithing into my designs. So far the skills are basic but fun.

I see lot's of potential and am starting to set up soldering and silverworking spaces into the studio.

I've also played with some precious metal clay that I'd purchased ages ago but was nervous to use. I'm wearing the little pendant to the right today although Boo is staking claim on the squid and will be wearing it tomorrow.

James has been working hard plastering the walls in the dining room. Bee and I had an impulse to peel all the old wallpaper off one afternoon which drove James a bit insane.

He's making me promise to leave all the other walls be for at least a year and making Bee promise to call his cell phone if I'm tempted to break my promise. Although, he looks happy enough with the task at hand... aw, what's one more room while you've got the plastering supplies out?

Saturday, 5/3/07

Quick shot of Bee with her posse in the school play. She was an awesome Sally! For all the aunts, uncles, and cousins who didn't catch the performance. I'll let you know when the DVD is in.

I've come up with a three-year plan to eliminate my debt... three years... ugh. Either that or James buckles down and gets a full-time-job (dirty word, she said a dirty word!) Three years of no extras and no fun. Of course I make this decision after I tell the kids we're going to Orlando when school is out and right before the ultra expensive season of summer camps begin.

Whew, this update is taking longer than I thought. I'll refresh the journal with photos of my work spaces in the studio. A few years back my husband, James, had converted a small screen porch off the back of our house to a studio for me. I've recently reorganized the space to fit four distinct spaces.

Hot Glass, lampwork area with torch and two kilns, one for fusing and one for annealing lampwork beads. Lots of glass rods and tools to play with and a few new bead mandrels poking out of the kiln.

Fused Glass, space to cut and assemble fused glass panels. The kids like to play here too, Boo is assembling the layered piece on the bottom left. To the left of this is a table with wet saw for fused glass and dremel to clean beads.

Photography Set-up, reptile lamps with high wattage bulbs, tiles for texture, and white sheets to bounce the light. Not sure what I had in the red box. This photo wasn't very well planned...

My favorite pic... The Jewelry Space, every time I sit to work here our kitty Magic decides to keep me company. The large photos are of Dad printed for his memorial ceremony a few years back. Not quite sure what to do with them so he keeps me company while I'm making pretty things.

And, if you're interested in beads and jewelry check out the web site. I've finally updated, hurrah!
