Welcome to a day in the life of Beth Mellor, Beeboo artist and designer.

A bit of background...
I'm married to a self-employed carpenter with two school age children. We live in a wild-kingdom with 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 fish, 2 turtles, and too many chickens to count.

I have a bachelor's degree in Illustration from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and work full-time as the staff artist in Media Services at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grafton, MA. I create websites, illustrations for publication, graphic design of brochures, newsletters, posters, whatever is needed. Every day is different.

I launched Beeboo in 1998 naming the business after my daughter Bee, and son Boo (nicknames of course). In 2000 my talented jack-of-all-trades husband, James, converted our screen porch to a studio. We set up a hot station for lampworking and fused glass, and a cold station for jewelry making. It's constantly in a state of chaos (as is the rest of my house) but I love it!

At the age of 71 my fabulous father, Herb, was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). My mom, Natalie, was Dad's primary care-giver. Throughout the 2 year battle with ALS both she and Dad continued to make the most of every day, taking it as it comes and relishing the time they had together.

Dad passed away in April of 2005 after a long battle with the disease. We love you and miss you Herb, Dad, Papa... You are my inspiration.

A day in the life...

Friday, 12/15/06

I've been playing with a holiday greeting at work. Individual animal photos were taken by my coworker Andy around campus here at the Vet School. Then I ran some filters and combined graphics in Photoshop. A fun day at work.

I'll be spending the weekend shopping, preparing the house for the upcoming holidays and Bee's birthday on Monday. Tough time of year for a birthday celebration... James and I didn't plan that one very well. Hope to see you Wednesday at UMass. Watch you're email if you're on the list!

Tuesday, 12/12/06

Update to my update.... the UMass Medical School Trunk Show date has been changed from this week until next. So, if you're in the area stop by on Wednesday, December 20th (date change from below!) I'll be set up in the Medical School Bookstore from 9AM til 2PM (time change from below!) I will not be located in the lobby, you'll need to enter the bookstore to find me. See you then. Beth

Beeboo news update! I'll be heading to UMass Medical School in Worcester for a quick pre-holiday trunk show at the bookstore on Thursday, December 14th from 8AM til 2PM. Hope to see you then.

Hmmm... what's up in the Mellor house this week. I'm feeling a little behind and a bit stressed about the holidays but what else is new. Bee and Boo haven't given me much of a clue as to what they want for a big gift this year other than a cell phone and James and I have decided they're still too young. Any ideas?

Tuesday, 11/23/06

Happy Thanksgiving. It's a cold, gray, and rainy day here in Massachusetts. Perfect day for a wood fire and a slice of warm pie. The kids are still snuggled down sleeping. James and Shultzie are out hunting the elusive pheasant.

I'm up early sneaking in a couple hours of jewelry making. I have my favorite show of the year (actually this year I feel like it's my only show of the year...) at the Congregational Church in Princeton next weekend, 12/2/06, from 10-3. Swing by for a visit if you're in the area. There will also be a small works show at the Princeton Arts Society at the Princeton Center Building. Nice day for a drive (I hope) and some early handcrafted holiday shopping. I'll try and do a mini web update the show, psst... don't forget the secret code if you're on the email list...

After my morning beading frenzy I'm shifting into the kitchen to work on appetizers for dinner at Mom's. This will be our last holiday in the Athol house. Mom has bought in to a revamped 55+ community in Rutland. A tiny development of tiny modular houses, each with their own front porch and carport. It'll be wonderful to be 10 minutes from Gramma.

All for now and as always, enjoy the day. Beth

I have to share a conversation I had with Boo this morning. The kids and I decorated the porch last night and made 100 popcorn balls for the trick-or-treaters. I woke this morning to find the end of our driveway swamped. I was completely stressed out about how the trick-or-treaters will get up to the house and was brainstorming with James and the kids.... a load of sand, stone, laying down boards for a walkway... Boo says, "I know! Let's put Shultzie (our dog) out on a chain at the front bushes and dress him like a swamp monster!" Sounds like a plan. Happy Halloween!

Sunday, 10/29/06

Bee all ready for the TPS Middle School Halloween Dance. Next up, the Grim Reaper pays a visit...

The wind is wild outside right now. Yesterday we had huge rain storms and this afternoon it was hailing. Amazing weather pattern which I'm hoping works itself out by Halloween night. Nothing worse than trick-or-treating with rain gear over your costume.

I've decided to make popcorn balls for the tricksters. Popcorn, honey, brown sugar, butter... yum! Stop on by for a treat!

Friday, 10/27/06

Boo says "Mom, Can I be the Grim Reaper for Halloween? I could buy a black robe, a creepy mask, skeleton gloves, and a sickle." I say "Yes!" and I'm thinking... No sewing, I love easy costumes!"

Bee says "Mom! I love this mask. I want to buy it for Halloween." I say "OK" and I'm thinking.... hmmm cool mask, some of her pink and green clothes, easy costume, two for two! Yes!

Bee says "Mom! I did a drawing of the costume to go with the mask. Can we go to the fabric store?" I say "OK" and I'm thinking.... Damn!

Mellor Halloween Saga 2006...to be continued.

And, if you're interested in beads and jewelry check out the web site. I've finally updated, hurrah!
